How To Jam A Pencil Into Your Neck

This is the fourth magic tutorial in a series of five.

If you’ll remember, I had you vote on your top five favorite tricks and these are the results so far…

5: Restoration
4: Production
3: Levitation
2: ???
1: ???

The number two most voted-on effect is:

Penetration!

(I think the results were skewed by the fact that some people thought they were being funny by choosing “penetration” as their favorite.) :(

At any rate, it is what it is.

Here is a tutorial on how to pass a solid object (a pencil) through another solid object (your neck).

http://www.themagicteacher.com/articles/788/1/Pencil-Thru-Neck

Please use extreme caution and follow the directions very carefully. This is not a trick meant for youngin’s.

Go spread some (gross) wonder!

Levitation Tutorial

I hope you had a great weekend. I was busy renovating my office, but now it’s time to pick back up where we left off in our magic tutorial series…

What was the 3rd favorite effect chosen by magicians?

Levitation!

(Honestly, I thought this would be #1 by a long-shot, but I guess I was wrong!)

Here is a tutorial teaching a very famous and powerful self-levitation.

P.S. Have you heard of the Tarantula?

Well this may be better…

THE MLS (Huh? What Tarantula?)
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The MLS is Steve Fearson’s “Master Levitation System” and frankly, it is bad…ass…

You’re a magician. You should be able to float stuff.

The 4th Place Effect

Yesterday, I taught you a restoration effect and today I’ll be teaching you a…

Production effect!

Turning “nothing” into “something” has always been a favorite effect…especially when that “something” is MONEY!

The trick I’m teaching you today is called “Denarius” and it is a silly story trick with a neat, visual production of an antique coin.

It has an interesting move in it, but really it is a quick “throw-away” type of effect.

Here it is:

The other trick I’d like to teach you is called “Redemption”. I taught this to you back in January, but here it is again…

I suppose “Redemption” is more of a transformation effect, but what the heck.

The Results Are In…

Last week, I had you vote on which of the five basic magic effects you liked best.

I promised I would teach you an effect from the most popular category.

I lied.

I’m going to teach you one effect from each category.

Starting from last place to first place…

Here are the results:

In 5th place (AKA…Last) are Restoration effects.

This is funny because spectators seem to LOVE restoration effects (Healed and Sealed, Gypsy Thread, Torn & Restored Newspaper, etc.)

Another very popular restoration effect is the torn and restored card.

Here is a tutorial I did for CardTrickInsider.com:

More Magic Trick Categories?

After receiving many emails, I feel I should explain something about the “Fave Five” magic categories a little further…

Mentalism is not technically magic…it’s mentalism. That’s why I did not include things like prediction, psychokinesis, super-human strength, etc. in my list of the five most basic magic effects.

Also, I suppose a restoration might be considered a version of transformation (with a restoration, you’re changing a destroyed object into a whole object). However, the main difference is that you’re using just ONE object (transformation uses two different objects.)

Do you think restoration is worthy of its own category? Why or why not?

Go spread some wonder!

P.S. The voting results are almost all in! Right now there is a tie for first place. Place your vote by commenting on the “Fave Five” post below. Please no emails. Only votes placed as a comment on the blog are counted.

Fave Five Magic Tricks

Did you know there are really only five magic effects?

Everything else is just a variation or combination of those five.

Here’s magic’s “Fave Five”:

  1. Vanish – Making something disappear.
  2. Production – Making something appear
  3. Restoration – Destroying something and then putting it back together.
  4. Penetration – Making a solid object pass through another solid object.
  5. Levitation – Defying gravity. Making something (or someone) float.

An example of a combination would be a transposition. An object disappears and then reappears somewhere else.

Or a transformation. An object disappears and instantly another object appears in its place.

The possibilities are endless. Which is why there are so many magic tricks out there.

I want you to post a response below and answer this question:

Which of the five magic effects is your favorite?

When the results are in, whichever effect wins, will be the next effect that I teach you.

Go spread some wonder!

Focus On The Dust

Last weekend, I was at my brother’s house helping him clean up from this winter’s huge ice-storm.

Here’s a video showing clips of the damage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY_kSccz7kE

As I type this, every single house has a HUGE pile of dead brances on its front lawn.

Anyway, my dad and I go to help him remove a dead tree from his front yard and we have two chainsaws.

Neither of them will start.

All we’ve got is a small hand saw to cut down this huge, thick, heavy branch.

So I climb the tree and start sawing.

And sawing, and sawing, and sawing…

After about an hour, we got pretty frustrated. We couldn’t get a good angle and it was slow-going. It seemed like trying to empty the ocean with a bucket.

I said, as long as I see sawdust, that means I’m making progress. (I tried not to look at how much more had to be cut.)

On and on it went. We took shifts, and eventually the huge limb crashed to the ground.

What the heck does this have to do with magic?

One word…”Persistence”.

In order to be a success with your magic, you need persistence.

Even though it may seem like you’re getting nowhere, keep your focus on the sawdust and not on how far you have to go.

If you stick with magic long enough and keep improving (making sawdust), then you’ll be a success.

If you focus on the obstacles in your way (the huge limb) then you will fail.

My advice for you today is to keep making sawdust…and get some help while you’re at it!

The Trick That Fooled The Ex-Physics Teacher

Here’s a magic trick that I didn’t invent, but you really should know…

I’ve used it to fool magicians, engineers, a yoga instructor (and energy expert), and even an ex-physics teacher (who happens to be my dad…who has seen me perform thousands of tricks.)

It’s completely impromptu and completely devastating…
