Redemption Coin Trick by Tim David

I have been away for a few days, so I wanted to make up for it with a really great post today.

I spent the weekend in the mountains of New Hampshire and it was great to just “get away”. I locked myself in a room with a few coins to do some creative work (the fun stuff) and came up with some cool stuff. I can’t say much about the ideas just yet, but in a few months, these tricks and routines will either be polished and perfected or canned entirely. My audiences will decide.

The rest of the trip was just RELAXATION!

Then early this week, I’ve been fulfilling orders from the weekend. Here’s a picture of me standing next to a stack of some of those orders…

Magic orders

You can see why I’ve been so busy! :)

So today, I want to give you a routine that is special to me. I can’t explain why I like it so much, but I do. I admit that it’s just a “throw-away” effect…but I really like the presentation and the simplicity of everything.

It was a very difficult decision NOT to include it on my upcoming DVD, “High Impact Coin Tricks”. I made the decision because the other stuff is too good. There just wouldn’t be any room left for this little guy. Even if it is a pet trick of mine.

Here is a video performance and explanation of “Redemption” by Tim David.

This is a nice “throw-away” effect with some fun moves. Very practical and useable. Just go into a convenience store, buy a bottle of soda (using cash), and use a quarter from the change you receive.

Or you can use your own quarter and borrow a soda cap from someone.

Either way, it’s ready to go in an instant.

It’s pretty much an impromptu “street magic” kind of effect. I think you’ll like this magic tutorial video.

Go spread some wonder!

Three Important Things For You Today…

I’ve got THREE important things I need to talk to you about today, so I’m just going to jump right into it…

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
FIRST: TOMORROW NIGHT, TALK TO TIM DAVID

I’ll be doing a teleseminar tomorrow night (Wednesday, 1/21 at 9:30pm EST).

You’ll be able to call in and talk with me – or listen in via the web. I’ll be teaching everyone about great ways to add income to your magic biz.

Eric Paul (MoreMoneyWithMagic.com) will be interviewing me.

I RARELY do live lectures, but this is the next best thing. Make sure you’re there.

Here’s the info:

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
SECOND: MAGIC REVIEWS…

Magic product reviews are SO helpful.

I very rarely regret a buying decision because I do my research on a product before I buy it.

With this in mind, I’ve posted a review section at CardTrickInsider.com. Even Basic members can view the reviews. Just log in and click on “Tutorials”.

You’ll see the review section there.

This month, I review “Election” by Eric Ross.

THIRD: THE REVIEWS ARE IN!

Speaking of magic reviews…

Since the release of my S.O.S. DVD, people have been sending me all kinds of great reviews. They love it!

Here’s are some highlights from what Magic Geek had to say about my DVD:

“The production is awesome and really, really clever, but they didn’t stop there. Tim David has been working with this special coin for a long time and it really shows. The new ideas and routines are usable and astonishing. Any one of the additional effects could have been packaged up as their own routine and sold individually, including: Coin through Face,
Raze, The Insight Vanish, and Off-Hand. Fantastic stuff!” – MagicGeek.com

Thanks Magic Geek!

And here’s one from a customer:

“I got the S.O.S. DVD and love it. I still enjoy seeing you do it. It looks soooooo good, like real magic.” – John Crippen

I just got a huge shipment in and they’re ready to go again. Grab your copy at:

http://www.TimDavidMagic.com/sos.html

(Hurry, the last huge shipment I got sold out in about 2 days.)

Martin Luther King Jr. and REAL Magic

Hope your weekend was fun.

We got buried in almost 2 feet of snow over the course of the last few days. It seemed like the snow would never end.

It is beautiful to look at though.

Today we’re celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It’s amazing to think of where our
country was in his day, versus where our country is now.

I’m proud to be an American and regardless of my political views, I can’t respect enough what President-elect Obama has accomplished and what the American people have accomplished.

You can bet that when Obama becomes the 1st African-American President, I’ll be thinking of Martin Luther King Jr. and the 1000s of others who would not stand for the social injustice, prejudice, and racism.

They DID something about it.

They didn’t sit home and complain about it.

They didn’t look to others to take the lead.

They didn’t wait for the “time to be right”.

They didn’t become violent or revenge-seeking.

They saw something that wasn’t right…And they fixed it. Peacefully and powerfully.

It is my hope that all the injustices in this world (and in your life) will be eradicated in the same way.

Peacefully and powerfully.

Now that’s how you make real magic happen.

Go spread some wonder!

Are You Making Magic Your “Life”, or…

Many magicians have no problem making magic their “life”. However, some magicians DO have a problem making magic their “living”.

They think that if they get paid for performing, it will take ALL the fun out of it.

Do you believe that?

Here’s what I believe…

- Performing magic is the best job I’ve ever had.

- I get paid to perform, but I always have the freedom to perform for free.

- Charging for my shows has made my shows MUCH better. It makes me value my act even more.

- Getting “out there” and doing shows for “real people” on a regular basis is an amazing experience. Since they don’t know me, they tell me what they REALLY think about my show.

- The money is fantastic. ($150 for a 30-minute pre-school show, $325 for a 50-minute birthday, $495 for a 45-minute school assembly, $995 for an 80-minute college activity.)

Try getting those hourly rates at a “real job”.

- I now look at my act as a worthy investment and not just a “money pit”. My wife does not get angry when I buy tons of new magic or DVDs.

Do I say any of this to impress you?

Of course not, there are a lot of guys doing a lot better than I am, that’s for darn sure.

I’m saying this to impress upon you that magic as a job (part-time or full-time) can be MORE fun than magic as a hobby.

And NOT just because of the money.

Yes there are some parts of a magic “job” that DO seem like work. (Paperwork, promoting yourself, grinding out bookings, etc.) I work HARD almost every day.

BUT…

You’re probably going to be doing WORK at a job somewhere else anyway.

Why not WORK on your magic career and experience all those benefits?

Besides, I LOVE the work that I do on my magic career. In fact, it seems more like fun than anything else.

Haven’t you ever dreamed of what it would be like to be a professional magician?

If that is your dream, I encourage you to plan accordingly, and then go for it.

Go spread some wonder!

P.P.S. Kranzo’s Pimpin’ effect (Trick of the Year for ‘08?) is still available at:

http://www.TheMagicTeacher.com/pimpin.html

Infant by Shaun Dunn

I don’t know what to say about this effect, so I’ll just let the video speak for itself…

I don’t know about you, but I laughed. Of course, before I laughed, I made damn sure that no babies were harmed during the making of this film. I love babies.

Magic Trick of the Year

Last night I watched the season premiere of 24.

I’m not a TV person, but MAN I love this show.

I haven’t watched it since season 3, so I’ve got a lot of catching up to do.

Sooooo…..I went on Amazon.com and ordered seasons 4, 5, and 6 on DVD!

Amazon.com is great.

They have tons of feedback from the people who have bought the product that you are looking at.

That is SO helpful. It’s changed the way I buy things.

Even magic tricks (No, I don’t buy my magic from Amazon.com!)

In fact, before I buy ANY magic trick, I look for feedback from several other magicians who own the effect or prop.

I’ve been burned buying crappy magic before and it doesn’t feel good.

Right now, I’m investigating “Election” by Eric Ross. I’ll let you know. :)

- Tim David

P.S. One trick that just about everyone agrees on is “Pimpin” by Nate Kranzo.

It was nominated for “Trick of the Year” for 2008 and magicians flat-out LOVE it.

If you haven’t seen it yet, take a look…

http://www.themagicteacher.com/pimpin.html

This baby gets great reviews from magicians as well as spectators!

P.P.S. What is YOUR favorite magic trick of 2008?

Is Ignorance Really Bliss?

I hope you had a good weekend.

I got snowed in at my mom’s house and played board games and billiards late into the night. Wow. I suck at pool.

Before that, my family went to a party at an old friend’s house.

A VERY old friend’s house.

In fact, this person hired me for my very first paid magic show way back in 1992.

I showed them some of my magic now and they were blown away at “how far I’ve come”.

Anyway, because of the snow, there was a parking ban in effect.

Basically, that means you can’t park on one side of the road because the plows will be coming through.

Sure enough, my step father was one of the lucky ones to get a parking violation.

We were from out of town and had NO IDEA that there was a parking ban in effect.

But you know what they say…”Ignorance is no excuse!”

He’ll have to pay the $40 ticket, even though he knew nothing about the law.

It’s tough, but it’s the law.

And you know what?

It’s the same with your magic!

Real spectators can be tough and unforgiving! Many times you’ll only have one shot to impress them.

It is your responsibility to be aware of everything that happens during your magical performances.

Ignorance is no excuse!

The best (and probably ONLY) way to eliminate magical ignorance is to perform (and fail) in front of real people as often as you can.

I encourage you to do that this week.

Don’t be afraid to fail, because each failure is a learning experience.

The more you learn, the less often “ignorance” will affect your magic.

Never stop learning.

Go spread some wonder!

We’ve got some cool things in the works and you’re going to want to be part of it!

Why Magic Theory Sucks

Before I tell you why I hate magic theory, let me tell you what magic theory is.

Magic theory comes from magicians sitting around with each other “sessioning”.

Magic theory comes from practicing alone in your room for hours.

Magic theory comes from reading magic books and watching DVDs.

Magic theory comes from listening to a lecture from a guy who has never done a magic show in his life.

In other words, magic theory is what sounds good on paper. It’s a set of ideas that someone “thinks” would be good to apply to your magic.

Now I’m not saying that reading magic books, practicing, sessioning, or attending lectures is bad. In fact, you SHOULD be doing those things.

What IS bad is sitting around pontificating about your show, just THINKING about what would or would not work.

It’s also bad to take advice from magicians who have NO REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE.

The only advice you should be taking is the advice from your own experience in front of real people, or other people’s
experience in front of real people.

Everything else is just guesswork or conjecture. That’s why they call it “Theory”. And that’s why theory sucks.

Please don’t get me wrong…

Practicing is good. Sessioning is good. Attending lectures is good. Watching DVDs and reading books is good.

THEORY is bad.

My advice for you today is to stop thinking so much about your magic and start performing it for real people!

You will learn so much more by getting out there and actually performing than you could by any other means.

Similarly, be careful who you take advice from. The guys at the local magic club meetings may mean well, but if they have no real show experience, then all they can give you is theory.

Go spread some wonder!

- Tim David

P.S. If you’re interested in learning the type of card magic that works in the “real world” (with NO theory), then check out what we have going on at:

http://www.CardTrickInsider.com

Every month, I provide you with card trick tutorials of tricks that have what I call “impact factor”.

That means they “WORK” in the real world, for real spectators, in real situations. They carry a huge impact.

Soon, we’re going to be starting a special members-only teleclass series.

This month’s topic is “How To Have Unshakeable Confidence While Performing Magic”. You can only attend if you are a member of CTI.com.

Magic and WHAT???

Jay Sankey is one of the funniest magicians out there.

You’ve got to see this video he put on YouTube, it’s hysterical…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPDOerLJ0RU

In it, he talks about “Mancing”: The art of magic combined with the art of dancing.

It’s a very funny video, but there’s also an important magic lesson to be learned.

Watch the video, then ask yourself…

What talents can you bring to the table besides your magic?

Can you juggle? Can you sing? Can you make people laugh? Can you tell a great story? Can you do mentalism? Hypnosis? Play an instrument?

All kidding aside, if you take your natural talents and abilities and incorporate them into your magic, you’ll create something unique and original that your audiences may enjoy MORE than just a magic show.

Go spread some wonder!

- Tim David

P.S. I use a lot of hypnosis techniques when performing my magic. My audiences don’t always realize it, but it improves the effectiveness and impact of my magic.

If you know anything about hypnosis, then you’ll know how effective it is.

If you’d like to learn about hypnosis, visit this page:

http://www.TheMagicTeacher.com/pages/Learn-Hypnosis.html

(You may have to copy and paste the above link into your browser window.)

Maybe I should call my magic and hypnosis blend, “Magnosis”. What do you think? :)
