Go spread some wonder!
These three guys are actually very creative film makers and they’re taking YouTube by storm.
Have you seen their interactive web videos yet? I’m just warning you now…if you start, you’ll be watching them for the next few hours…they’re THAT good!
Here is one I saw today:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDn0ow8EzcU
Why are they so entertaining? And more importantly, what can we learn from them as magicians and mentalists?
They are entertaining because…
* They’re kind of funny
* Good special effects
* They’re freakin’ INTERACTIVE!
In my opinion, the ONLY reason they have so many views is because the videos are interactive.
The plot (by itself) sucks and the comedy is just okay…However, the fact that I can interact and “choose my own adventure” makes this WILDLY entertaining.
Please, please, PLEASE make it a point to involve your audience when you perform your magic. It will take your performance to a new level.
P.S. This is one other possible reason the card manipulation guy fails to entertain people…his act is not interactive.
For you card manipulators out there…come up with a way to involve your spectators. It may take some creativity, but you’re artists…I know you can do it. Send me a video of what you come up with and I’ll post it here.
Look at this list of magicians and read WHY they made the list of “favorites”…
http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2009/11/27/favorite-magicians/?test=faces
As a magician, what can you learn from this? Remember, this list was created by non-magicians.

The demo video of this trick is so good, people are forced to accuse me of lying or trick photography in order to try and explain it.
I’m not lying. There are no magnets. There is no trick photography or special effects. It really is impromptu.

This is one of the most magical things I’ve seen in a LONG time.
There is a major lesson here for magicians and I hope you catch it.
It’s not your magic that’s important…it’s the experience you create for your audience. It’s the entertainment value you deliver.
I’ve been saying it for years, but I think this video is the best thing I’ve seen that actually represents that idea fully and completely.
Without the monkey, this magician is very mediocre. WITH the monkey, he has a home-run act that he can perform ANYWHERE for ANYONE on ANY STAGE.
It has universal appeal and I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t want to watch this guy do magic tricks for his monkey.
Heck, I’m not ashamed to admit that I was almost brought to tears by the overwhelming sense of wonder that the chimp re-ignited in me. As a magician, I’ve seen a lot of great reactions to magic (including thousands of live performances for children), but the chimp’s reactions in this video were absolutely pure, completely uncomplicated, and truly magical and wonderful in and of themselves.
There are going to be some magicians out there who complain about this guy’s magical ability and the tricks he selected.
I’ve got three words for you…”Get a LIFE!”
This is one of the top 3 magic acts I’ve EVER seen.
Please comment on this post and let me know you’re alive out there.
Beginners take note.
Jerome Murat has created an extremely original and artistic performance piece combining magic with music, mime, theater, and not to mention a killer costume.
If you want to add more artistry to your magic, then STUDY what Jerome Murat has done here. It is lively, engaging, entertaining, and mesmerizing.
Most of all, the magic is a supplement to the story and the ENTERTAINMENT.
Kudos to Jerome Murat.
Please think, my people.
Despite what they say, there are some dangerous ideas here:
http://www.cracked.com/article_17276_5-scientific-ways-make-water-do-magic.html
These five ideas are half science, half magic, and ALL cool. (My favorite is the whiskey & water bit).
Give ‘em a try (with proper precautions, if necessary) and post a comment telling me the following:
# Which was your favorite?
# Did you try any of them? Share your story. (Again…be SAFE!!!!)
# Any ideas for using this stuff in a magic act?

Michael Jackson was the single most successful entertainer of our time. Regardless of what you think of him, you should take notes and learn from his example as an entertainer.
After all, he wasn’t just a singer, dancer, choreographer, actor, or enormous a-list celebrity, but he was also an illusionist.
Yep, MJ did magic tricks.
He knew that to have the most electric and energetic stage performance, he had to use everything at his disposal.
(And since he was so ridiculously talented and wealthy, he had quite a bit at his disposal.)
Throughout his career, he included illusions in his concerts such as magically appearing on stage in a puff of smoke.
He even invented (and patented) the “anti-gravity lean” effect made famous in the video for “Smooth Criminal”
What’s the lesson here?
YOU should use all at your disposal too when trying to entertain your audiences. Add your other talents and your personality to your magic.
If a singer can use magic, why can’t a magician use music? Or stories? Or dance? Or all of the above and more?
Comedy, music, poetry, and hypnosis techniques are all commonly added to magic shows.
Think about this…
What can YOU add that would make your show more entertaining, more energetic, more amazing, and more YOU?

P.S. On July 11th, Area 51 is coming.
Riley Dayne has found the perfect combination of magic, mentalism, and hypnosis to create his Area 51 system.
To celebrate the upcoming release, he’s got some gifts for you.
Two days ago, he released his “Rockstar Report”.
You can still get that (for free) here:

But today, he’s got two great tricks for you. (This is just the tip of the iceberg…)

I have the best customers in the world.
Really.
You guys actually care about learning how to properly PERFORM magic tricks and you’re not just out to learn a zillion magic secrets as quickly as possible.
I would take a magician who can PERFORM five tricks *really* well over a magician who can do five hundred tricks just okay. I’d make that deal any day of the week.
You know what?
So would your audiences.
Just a thought.

P.S. Any time I get a question emailed to me (and I get hundreds of emails per day) I know that for every one person to actually ask a question, there are probably a hundred people who would like to know the answer too.
That’s why from time to time I feature a “Question and Answer” segment in my emails to you.
So, let’s get to some questions!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
QUESTION: AM I READY FOR MAGIC COLLEGE?
I have been doing magic for almost a year now and have decided to make it my profession. I have purchased over five hundred dollars worth of tricks reaching from card
tricks to stage magic. As I am only 13 I have limited funds so if you could give me the prices for how much it would cost per month I would gladly appreciate it.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
TIM’S ANSWER:
Hey Zach,
Magic College is $1 for the first month and $9.97 a month after that.
You can sign up at:
http://www.CardTrickInsider.com
We’ll start you off with card tricks and then move on from there.
- Tim David
P.S. Spending more money doesn’t always make you a better magician. It’s spending time that makes the difference.
Also, instead of doing everything (close-up to stage), find what you like and specialize in it. Become the absolute best in one area instead of being good in all areas.

QUESTION: SOS!
How difficult is the Sos? What about the other 8 tricks? Is the gimmick a gimmick coin, or something else? Is it uncomfortable to wear?
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
TIM’S ANSWER:
Hi Sam,
The SOS is not difficult, although it isn’t a common “move” in magic. I just got an email from a beginner who was fooling magicians left and right with it at his 1st magic convention.
Like anything else, it should be practiced a few times but if a beginner can do it…then that should give you an idea.
The other 8 effects range in difficulty. There are some relatively easy ones and some relatively hard ones.
- Tim David
P.S. Yes, the gimmick is a gimmicked coin. Nothing to wear.
P.P.S. What am I talking about? Don’t listen to me…Instead listen to people who have bought it:

I’ve been getting a lot of comments on YouTube and some emails saying that the trick “Motion” is done with magnets.
(To see “Motion, click here:)
http://www.TheMagicTeacher.com/motion.html
I don’t know how else to say it…
There are NO magnets used. (That’s my wedding ring in the video…I never take it off.)
* BORROW a pen (no switches)
* BORROW a water bottle (or beer or soda bottle)
* Move the pen with your mind.
Now that we’ve got *that* straightened out, let’s get something else, even more important, straightened out:
Nothing…*NOTHING*….is more important than your audience’s perception of your performance.
…Not your tricks
…Not your sleights
…Not your patter
…Not your methods
For example:
Even though “Motion” doesn’t use magnets, it is my responsibility to MAKE SURE the audience knows that I don’t use magnets.
They can’t even *think* about magnets. Once they do, the trick might as well be ruined.
It’s the same with every trick you perform. Your audience needs to know that what you’re doing is apparently impossible, with no conceivable explanation.
Any explanation they come up with…even if it is the wrong one…ruins the illusion.
Suggestions for those who have and use “Motion”:
Make it move in different directions (both towards and away from your “ring hand”).Re-affirm that it is a borrowed pen. Let them examine everything.
Suggestions for those who DON’T have “Motion”:
Buy it. Seriously. Today. It’s a great trick.
