Free 1-Hour Interview On The “Business” Of Magic – Available Until Friday

Magic Business BookWhether you want to take your magic to the masses or even if you just want to perform some shows for a little extra money…you need to master the business side of magic.

On 7/27/10 I interviewed Elliott Smith, a professional magician with over 35 years of experience. Most magicians haven’t heard of Elliott because he’s been busy performing his show for the “real world”.

He shared some great tips for those magicians who are just starting out, whether you’re 15 or 50, and also some advanced tips for those of us who are already working pros.

You can download and listen to the entire interview for FREE here:

P.S. Here’s that link I promised at the end of the interview:

“What do you do when they ask to see a trick?”

It’s a tough job, but fear not! I’m here to help with SOLID real-world tips from over 15 years as a professional magician.

You’re going to love what I reveal tonight.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a close-up performer, a stage performer, or anything in between. Your impromptu set will be responsible for more bookings than anything else that you do.

It’s going to be AMAZING and I hope to “see” you there.

P.S. #3: This will obviously be the only email I send about this…It’s happening live in a few hours! Don’t put this off.

My “Business Tip” For Anyone Who Does XCM

This is going to be a quick post…I’ve got a diaper to change, so I’ll get right to the point. :)

Anyone who is any good at XCM (Extreme Card Manipulations) can create an assembly program to bring into schools.

Basketball tricksters do this all the time.

They go in, they blow the kids away with amazing tricks, then they talk about the importance of hard work.

They motivate the kids to achieve their dreams.

I don’t see why an XCMer couldn’t do the same thing!

Schools pay good money and you can even get grants for this sort of thing.

What do you think?

How Magic Can Help You “Beat The Reaper”…

Randy Pausch is a legend.

He was given 3-6 months to live.

Nine months later, he gave this brief, but very powerful speech:

I love this line:

“It is not the things we do in life that we regret, it is the things we do not do.”

So…

If you want to be a magician…DO IT!

If you want to make the jump from part-time to full-time…DO IT!

If you want to use your magic to make the world better…DO IT!

I assure you, you won’t regret it.

However, if you never turn your dreams into reality, then when your time comes, you WILL look back and regret *NOT* doing it.

I’ve seen too many magicians live their lives DREAMING about performing magic, without actually DOING it.

Don’t let this be you.

Take some action today towards reaching your dreams, whatever they are, and when you do, you’ll take a step towards truly “beating the reaper”.

Go spread some wonder!

P.S. Here we go again…

3 months ago, I took 10 magicians on an amazing ride.

Now, their magic careers are in full-swing and I’m ready to take on another group of 10.

We’re beginning in early July, so you’d better hurry. (The first 4 spots are already filled.)

Magic As A Job?

My softball team had a game last night (we lost….badly.)

Softball is something that I really enjoy and look forward to every year.

But if it weren’t for magic, I might not have been able to play.

Let me explain…

Some of my friends can’t play because they have job schedules that don’t allow them to get time off from work.

Some guys can’t play because they don’t have enough money for the league fees.

So magic is not only something I love, but it also allows me to do OTHER things that I enjoy.

So thank you, my customers and my friends, for my “job” in magic.

One of the biggest kicks I get out of magic now is helping other magicians succeed.

I’ve put together two hands-on programs to help magicians start a career in magic…

For magicians who want to perform for a living, read this page:

I’ve got one opening right now.

For magicians who want to invent tricks, I’m running a killer contest.

Focus On The Dust

Last weekend, I was at my brother’s house helping him clean up from this winter’s huge ice-storm.

Here’s a video showing clips of the damage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY_kSccz7kE

As I type this, every single house has a HUGE pile of dead brances on its front lawn.

Anyway, my dad and I go to help him remove a dead tree from his front yard and we have two chainsaws.

Neither of them will start.

All we’ve got is a small hand saw to cut down this huge, thick, heavy branch.

So I climb the tree and start sawing.

And sawing, and sawing, and sawing…

After about an hour, we got pretty frustrated. We couldn’t get a good angle and it was slow-going. It seemed like trying to empty the ocean with a bucket.

I said, as long as I see sawdust, that means I’m making progress. (I tried not to look at how much more had to be cut.)

On and on it went. We took shifts, and eventually the huge limb crashed to the ground.

What the heck does this have to do with magic?

One word…”Persistence”.

In order to be a success with your magic, you need persistence.

Even though it may seem like you’re getting nowhere, keep your focus on the sawdust and not on how far you have to go.

If you stick with magic long enough and keep improving (making sawdust), then you’ll be a success.

If you focus on the obstacles in your way (the huge limb) then you will fail.

My advice for you today is to keep making sawdust…and get some help while you’re at it!

Go spread some wonder!

Is Magic Really A Performance Art? Or Just A “Kid’s Thing”?

One of my biggest pieces of advice to you has always been…

…Show your magic to “real people” as often as you can!

Practice doesn’t make perfect, real-world experience makes perfect.

Practice helps, but experience puts you over the top.

So naturally, the next question from my students is quite often…

“How do I find people to perform for?”

My recommendation is just to start booking yourself anywhere you can.

I’ve found that the fastest and easiest way to do this is by working kid shows.

Why?

Because kid shows are available around every corner.

For some reason, most people think of magic as a “kid’s thing”.

Think about it…

When performing for adults, how often do you hear them say…”Wow! My kids would LOVE this!”

I hear it all the time. And when I don’t hear it, I know they’re thinking it.

Even though I’m doing my best, knuckle-busting stuff…they’re still thinking it.

To them…

Magic is for kids.

So you can either go against the grain, or you can embrace it and run with it.

I got my start in magic by working for kids.

It was an amazing experience and I really honed my skills. Not only that, but my little magic hobby quickly became my full-time career!

So if you’re ready to get some more bookings, consider creating a show that kids would enjoy and then get out there and get some real world experience!

- Tim David

P.S. If you want more kid shows, or if you want help creating an act, I can help…

For my help with kid shows, visit:
http://www.BirthdayPartyPro.com/wanted.html

P.P.S. And yes, entertaining with magic IS a performance art. The only problem is, most people don’t see it that way.

I’m Giving Away My Birthday Party Business

Booking gigs is an exciting feeling for a magician.

Especially full-time magicians who depend on gigs in order to pay the bills!

Unfortunately, many magicians are feeling the economic times and just aren’t booking as many gigs as they used to.

At the local magic club meetings, everyone is “Doom and Gloom” and whining about the lack of work out there.

Everyone accepts that it’s “just the way it is right now” and some magicians are closing up shop and giving up entirely.

I encourage YOU to be different.

I encourage YOU to be POSITIVE.

Not in a fake, unrealistic way, but in a genuine way.

You may ask, “How could anyone be POSITIVE in this kind of situation?”

Personally, I just had my best month EVER.

And I’ve done that without lowering my prices.

You could tell me there’s no work, but I probably won’t listen to you. I’m too busy doing shows.

There IS work out there, but you may have to change your approach in order to get it.

I believe there is incredible opportunity right now for magicians.

- There’s less competition because magicians are getting out of the game left and right.

- The cost of running a magic biz is much cheaper because everything is much cheaper.
(Advertising, printing, etc.)

- People need to be entertained now more than ever. Their spirits need a lift.

- People don’t want to waste the money they DO have. They need to make sure their money is well spent.

If you can get people to like and trust you, then you won’t have any competition.

In these times…

What are you choosing to focus on?

The “doom and gloom”?

…Or the incredible opportunity?

Go spread some wonder,
- Tim David

P.S. If you’re willing to be positive, then I want to work with you.

I’m giving ten magicians everything I use to create lasting success in magic, regardless of the economic situation.

Everything. (Literally).

My entire kid show business.

Routines, shows, DVDs, 1-on-1 coaching, products, CDs, bookings, scripts, strategies, systems, and much, much, much, much more.

I’d love for you to be one of the ten.

Here’s all the information on the program…

http://www.BirthdayPartyPro.com/wanted.html

Go there now and check it out.

Are You Making Magic Your “Life”, or…

Many magicians have no problem making magic their “life”. However, some magicians DO have a problem making magic their “living”.

They think that if they get paid for performing, it will take ALL the fun out of it.

Do you believe that?

Here’s what I believe…

- Performing magic is the best job I’ve ever had.

- I get paid to perform, but I always have the freedom to perform for free.

- Charging for my shows has made my shows MUCH better. It makes me value my act even more.

- Getting “out there” and doing shows for “real people” on a regular basis is an amazing experience. Since they don’t know me, they tell me what they REALLY think about my show.

- The money is fantastic. ($150 for a 30-minute pre-school show, $325 for a 50-minute birthday, $495 for a 45-minute school assembly, $995 for an 80-minute college activity.)

Try getting those hourly rates at a “real job”.

- I now look at my act as a worthy investment and not just a “money pit”. My wife does not get angry when I buy tons of new magic or DVDs.

Do I say any of this to impress you?

Of course not, there are a lot of guys doing a lot better than I am, that’s for darn sure.

I’m saying this to impress upon you that magic as a job (part-time or full-time) can be MORE fun than magic as a hobby.

And NOT just because of the money.

Yes there are some parts of a magic “job” that DO seem like work. (Paperwork, promoting yourself, grinding out bookings, etc.) I work HARD almost every day.

BUT…

You’re probably going to be doing WORK at a job somewhere else anyway.

Why not WORK on your magic career and experience all those benefits?

Besides, I LOVE the work that I do on my magic career. In fact, it seems more like fun than anything else.

Haven’t you ever dreamed of what it would be like to be a professional magician?

If that is your dream, I encourage you to plan accordingly, and then go for it.

Go spread some wonder!
